Rue Kaladyte
Lead Guide . Professional Photographer/Videographer

Why do you ride your bike?
The bike has been an amazing vehicle in slowing me down to take in the scenery around me. It’s a great companion for my camera — you see and experience life a little differently from the saddle.  More simply and perhaps more truthfully, I just like to ride my bike.

In your mind, what is the most special part of Gravel Camp?
At the end of every week of Gravel Camp, I always ask myself, “How have I never met these people before?” You really get to know the clients and the guides. They’re all great people and it’s a great feeling knowing you got to know them a little and share a very special part of Arizona.

You’re a pretty special chica, who is that one person in your life who's encouraged you to think outside the box & truly become who you are are today?
Oof, I hope this isn’t too lame, but hands down, that person is Lael Wilcox. You’ll never meet someone as giving, down to earth or excited about life as her. Spend enough time with her, as I have been lucky enough to do, and it’ll rub off on you.

If you could be 'professional' in something, what would it be?
I have a degree in photojournalism from the Rochester Institute of Technology. My work has allowed me to spend time in southern Texas, Wyoming and most notably Anchorage, where I was a staff photographer/videographer for the largest newspaper in Alaska. I was the first hire at the paper in 18 years. Now, I work as a freelance visual journalist traveling the world with Lael.

What is your secret power during gravel camp?
At the end of every week, you’ll be presented with photos of yourself that will capture your time here in southern Arizona. I will do my best to keep the camera as unobtrusive as possible.

What is your dream vacation?
Spending the summer in Lithuania’s countryside with my father and grandfather, riding gravel roads, fishing, taking photos and eating bucketfuls of raspberries by day and watching popular American movies dubbed in Lithuanian by night. The 1994 film “Speed” starring Keanu Reeves is highly recommended if you’re brushing up on your language skills.
